Reaction by Minister De Jager regarding the result of the referendum in Iceland

The Minister of Finance, Jan Kees de Jager, signed a new tax treaty with Switzerland on 26 February 2010. The most important part of this treaty is the exchange of fiscal information.

The Supreme Court of the Netherlands has judged that the Tax and Customs Administration is allowed to use a longer additional tax assessment period in their hunt for Dutch citizens who have not declared their savings abroad. The consequence of the judgment is that the Inspector can take more than 5 years for imposing additional tax assessments in cases that have been stayed up to now (e.g. KB-Lux).

On 23 February, Her Majesty the Queen appointed Jan Kees de Jager Minister of Finance. He succeeds Wouter Bos, whose resignation has been accepted by Her Majesty. As Minister of Finance, Jan Kees de Jager will also embrace the tasks he already had as State Secretary.

Minister Bos has handed in his resignation together with all the other members of the Cabinet of the Dutch Labour Party (Partij van de Arbeid). After the meeting of the Cabinet, Minister Bos made a statement to that end.

The Fiscal Intelligence and Investigation Service FIOD has arrested four men and one women from Romania and Moldavia who are being suspected of skimming. The FIOD started the investigation, when on 6 December 2009 Customs came across a Romanian man with a large amount of money at Schiphol Airport. This money courier came from Mexico, was arrested and is still in custody.

On 27 January 2010, the Netherlands signed a treaty with San Marino for the exchange of tax information. The treaty was signed by Ambassador Stoelinga and the San Marino Minister of Foreign Affairs.

The Netherlands and UK Finance Ministers today met the Icelandic Finance Minister, who was accompanied by the leaders of the Independence Party and the Progressive Party.
